The Ganglin Church was one of the early ancient churches in Taiwan when the Christian Gospel was introduced to Taiwan. In May 1865, Maya doctors from the United Kingdom came to Taiwan for missionary work. On June 16th of the same year, they began work in the medical preaching of Tainan City. During this period, Mr. Li Shunyi, a resident of Okabayashi City, went to the Doctor Ma with his patient in the same village of his hometown to seek medical treatment. Mr. Li Shunyi not only admired Dr. Ma’s medical skills, but also admired the truth of Gospel.
Dr. Ma’s medical treatment in Tainan was brilliant because of his medical skills, and many critically ill patients were cured after he was treated. Therefore, many residents of the mountainous area seek special treatment. They traveled to Tainan to meet with the helpers of Dr. Ma. They not only received medical treatment but also heard the gospel of Christ. They returned home and proclaimed the gospel they heard. So many people accepted it. In the same year, in November of the same year, Dr. Ma and a foreign co-worker visited 岡林 [Ganglin], 木柵 [Mushan], 柑仔林 Ganzi Lin (now known as 溝坪 [Goupin] or 永興 [Yongxing] ), and 拔馬 [Bama] (now known as Zuozhen) to visit and preach. When they arrived in Ganglin, they were warmly welcomed and favored by the local residents.
The local first-generation believers did not have a chapel to meet. Therefore, to participate in the Sunday service, the brothers and other believers had to walk three days back and forth to the church in Kaohsiung. At that time, in order to listen to doctrine, it was necessary to set off with torches before dawn on Saturday and continue southwards. It was a day and night before Sunday morning arrived. During this time, the roads are exhausted and the meals are indefinite. There are often bandits on the road. The passers-by are often exposed to the danger of being robbed of their belongings, that is, life is often unsafe. So when they set out they must push food, weapons, firearms, pigeons, and torches. The torches and food are used for lighting and hunger; weapons and firearms are used to defend against the sudden looting on the way; as for the pigeons, after waiting for a group of people to arrive, they are released on Sunday morning to fly back to Ganglin and make the family members. Knowing that relatives can arrive safely can be assured.
In 1867, Dr. Ma once again went to medical preaching in Ganglin District and lived in the home of the brother of Shunyi for a few days. During this medical mission, some people were greatly moved to change their predecessors, burned down their golden princes and worshipped by Jesus Christ. The Savior and believers gradually increased. In this year, the Li Shunyi brothers contributed to the land (which is the present site of the church) and recruited 13 faithful believers to work together to build a simple meeting place. Ganglin Village had received the earliest gospel and had kinship relations with the entire village. Therefore, there was a long period of time when every villager of the village was gathered in the church to attend the service.
